The word jeans comes from a kind of material that was made in Europe. The material, called jean, was named after sailors from Genoa in Italy, because they wore clothes made from it.
Jeans were developed in America around 1872. Levi Strauss was a Bavarian dry goods merchant living in San Francisco. One of Levi’s customers was Jacob Davis, a tailor who frequently purchased bolts of cloth from the Levi Strauss & Co wholesale house. After one of Jacob’s customers kept purchasing cloth to reinforce torn trousers, he had an idea to use copper rivets to reinforce the points of strain, such as on the pocket corners and at the base of the button fly. Jacobs did not have the required money to purchase a patent, so he wrote to Levi suggesting that they both go into business together. After Strauss accepted Davis’s offer, on May 20, 1873, the two men received patent 139,121, a patent for an “Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings”, from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the blue jean was born.

HONG KONG: Although declining less than the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets yesterday, Hong Kong stocks fell for the first time in three days, with the Hang Seng Index falling 3.62 percent, or 755.68 points, to close at 20,137.65, after Ping An Insurance (Group) Co profit declined more than estimated and a drop in US consumer confidence fed concern a global recovery may not be as robust as hoped.
No stocks on the 42-member Hang Seng Index advanced, and August futures slipped 3.8 percent to 20,139.
China Life Insurance Co, the nation’s biggest insurer, sagged 3.9 percent to HK$32.30. Ping An, the country’s second-biggest insurer, fell 5.8 percent to HK$61.25. The company said net income fell 45 percent to 5.22 billion yuan in the first-half from a year earlier. Profit fell short of the 7.56 billion-yuan median estimate of three analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
Among other heavy hitters taking a hit were Li & Fung Ltd, the biggest supplier of clothes and toys to Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp, which gets 62 percent of its sales from the US, led exporters lower, dropping 4.7 percent to HK$26.50 after US consumer confidence unexpectedly declined this month.
The Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of sentiment fell to 63.2 from 66 the month before. Economists had forecast a rise to 69, according to the average estimate in a Bloomberg News survey.
Big oil also slipped: CNOOC Ltd,the country’s biggest offshore oil producer, slipped 4.3 percent to HK$10.28 after crude fell. PetroChina Co, the nation’s largest oil company, dropped 5.1 percent to HK$8.49. Crude oil for September delivery declined 1.5 percent to $66.51 a barrel in after-hours trading as of 2:46 pm Hong Kong time, extending its 4.3 percent decline of August 14.
“It will take some time before consumer confidence is restored in the US, since a lot of jobs have been lost there,” said Pearlyn Wong, Singapore-based investment analyst at Bank Julius Baer Co, which manages $350 billion. “Valuations remain stretched,” he said.
As for the bigger picture, the Hang Seng Index has soared 78 percent from a four-month low on March 9, amid speculation that governmental stimulus efforts worldwide, including 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) of spending on the mainland, will revive global growth.
The day’s decline was not confined to Hong Kong stocks. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, which tracks so-called H-shares of mainland companies, fell 4.3 percent to 11,393.60.
Other export-oriented companies were also hit hard yesterday.
Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings Ltd, the world’s largest supplier of branded athletic and casual shoes that gets more than half of sales from the US and Europe, fell 2.8 percent to HK$22.30. Esprit Holdings Ltd, the Hong Kong clothier that gets more than 80 percent of its sales from Europe, dipped 5 percent to HK$58.60.
On the mainland, the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets registered declines of 5.79 and 6.65, respectively.

Is Chinglish linguistic trash or a cultural treasure?
Two academics are going toe to toe over the issue: For American David Tool, it shows nothing but shameful disrespect for English, while German sinologist Oliver Radtke reckons it’s an enlightening cultural gem.
“Chinglish should be regarded with pride,” says Radtke, who has collected more than 5,000 specimens on his website www.chinglish.de and published two books on the subject. “It’s enriching an already-existing language, offering a new point of view, a new set of vocabulary and new usages.”
Radtke, who recently applied for what he says is the world’s first PhD on the topic of Chinglish, believes the only exception is when mistranslations cause danger, exceptional inconvenience or include the F-word – a common software mistranslation of the character for gan, which also means “dry” or “do”.
“If you look at a lot of the Chinese signage examples with those translations, you can see how the Chinese mind is working; it’s a window into how Chinese people think,” Radtke says.
“My goal is to let Chinglish be considered a bridge between two linguistic and cultural systems.”
But while Radtke contends Chinglish adds spice to the alphabet soup that is global English, Tool believes it often adds flies.
Rather than a point of pride, the Beijing Speaks Foreign Languages (BSFL) committee member argues most muddled translations are shameful.
Since 2001, he has helped the Beijing government fix baffling Chinese-English signs and estimates he has so far edited more than 1 million muddled passages.
He has become something of a local luminary for his work, garnering several top accolades, including a spot as the Olympic torch relay’s second torchbearer.
Tool says he supports use of some Chinese-English phrases that are at least as clear, and more concise, than “standard English”, such as “no nearing”, meaning “stay back”. But he believes the cultural treasure idea is “basically nonsense”. Chinglish, he insists, too often detracts from foreigners’ understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture.
“My major interest has always been the cultural aspects. For instance, Chinglish distracts from the dignity and purpose of a museum display when the foolish errors cause foreigners to laugh, or be irritated or confused.”
Radtke says Chinglish often works the other way, grabbing foreigners’ attention.
“How often do you remember the content of a museum a day after you left it?” he says.
“The whole pedagogical approach is usually pretty dull … so isn’t it great to remember something from that day?”
Radtke adds the Chinese-language information alone is usually vague and rarely contributes more than the Chinglish to visitors’ understanding.
He cites the example of a sign for “The former address of the emperor’s toilet” at the imperial summer palace in Chengde, Hebei province. The sign’s Chinese, he says, is nondescript but visitors are perhaps likelier to remember the spot because of the striking English wording.

LOS ANGELES: Michael Jackson’s mother, Katherine, is taking care of the singer’s three children and the family was to go to court yesterday in part to protect her rights to custody, the family’s spokesman said yesterday.
Londell McMillan, the Jacksons’ attorney, said the family hasn’t heard from Deborah Rowe, the mother of Jackson’s two oldest children, about custody.
“I don’t think there will be anybody who thinks that there is someone better” than Katherine Jackson to have custody, McMillan said on NBC television. “She is a very loving host of other grandchildren.”
Jackson left behind three children: Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., known as Prince Michael, 12; Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, 11; and Prince Michael II, 7. The youngest son was born to a surrogate mother.
Given the secrecy surrounding Michael Jackson’s children throughout his life, it is no surprise that there are lingering questions about who will care for them after his death. What is almost certain is this: Their fate will be decided in a courtroom.
Experts say the person who has the strongest legal claim to Jackson’s two oldest children is Rowe. As for the youngest child, Jackson’s wishes will be more influential. It remains unclear who Jackson designated as potential guardians for his children. Those details – likely contained in the 50-year-old singer’s will – have not been released.
Rowe’s attorney, Marta Almli, wrote in a statement on Saturday that “Ms Rowe’s only thoughts at this time have been regarding the devastating loss Michael’s family has suffered. Ms Rowe requests that Michael’s family, and particularly the children, be spared such harmful, sensationalist speculation and that they be able to say goodbye to their loved one in peace.”
Jackson never told his family who he had in place to handle his business affairs, a person close to the family said. The person, who requested anonymity because of the delicate nature of the situation, said they were told by the singer’s phalanx of advisors that he likely had a will, but it may be many years old.
Prince Michael II’s mother has never been identified, and while she may surface, it is likely that she signed away her rights, said Stacy Phillips, a Los Angeles divorce attorney who has represented numerous high-profile clients.
Jackson was by several accounts an attentive and loving father.
“He was a great father,” said Raymone Bain, Jackson’s former publicist and general manager. “Those kids knew three and four languages. Even the little one. They were well mannered and sweet. I can’t imagine these children without him.”
He was extremely protective of his children, who weren’t often seen in public, and were photographed wearing veils, masks or other items covering their faces when they were.
Rowe, a former nurse for Jackson’s dermatologist, married Jackson in 1996 but filed for divorce in 1999. She later gave up her custody rights to the children, but petitioned to have those rights restored in 2003 after Jackson was arrested on child molestation charges, and an appeals court sided with her.
Jackson and Rowe apparently agreed in 2006 regarding her rights, but the terms have never been disclosed. The couple’s divorce case that was heard in Los Angeles Superior Court remains closed.
Phillips said if her parental rights remain intact, she’s presumed to be first in line to receive custody of her two children. “That could still be contested,” she added.
Rowe would have to undergo an evaluation by the court to determine if she’s the best person to care for Jackson’s children. So, too, would anyone else who applies to become the children’s guardian – some of whom may have Jackson’s blessing.
“If he did indicate a preference, that will be given great weight, but that will not be determinative,” said Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred. “Children are not property, they cannot be willed to another person.”
Allred agreed that Rowe has better legal standing than others who apply for custody of Jackson’s eldest children. “She’s definitely going to have an advantage.”
But judges in California often take into account who is left in the children’s lives with a strong bond, said Charlotte Goldberg, a family law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
“It’s really a balance between continuity and stability and a biological relationship,” Goldberg said.
A judge deciding the matter may even seek input in chambers from Jackson’s children about who they feel comfortable with, she said.

LOS ANGELES – Michael Jackson was an entertainment phenomenon both triumphant and troubled, a dazzling performer who transcended barriers, transformed the music world and transfixed fans and non-fans alike in every corner of the Earth.
But Tuesday’s memorial was not for that Michael Jackson.
Instead, those closest to the legend gave us a glimpse of Michael Jackson the man.
In a poignant and serene service, the portrait they painted was of a human just as remarkable, making his loss doubly painful to bear for those who truly loved him.
“I just wanted to say … ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just wanted to say I love him — so much,” said Jackson’s 11-year-old daughter, Paris-Michael, before dissolving into tears and falling into the embrace of her aunt Janet.
It was a deeply emotional moment, the most profound part of a memorial that accomplished what Jackson could not in life: humanizing a man who for so long had seemed like a caricature.
How could someone who moved like he moved, sang like he sang, and reached musical heights no person has ever touched be as human as the rest of us? How could a man who threw a wedding for Elizabeth Taylor, had a chimpanzee as a companion, and wore masks to cover his surgically altered face be any part normal?
How can a man who admitted he shared his bed with boys — though he maintained it was never sexual, as others suggested — be a decent man, closer to saintly than devilish?
It took those closest to him, from his brother Marlon to his old friend Brooke Shields, to explain Michael Jackson to those who saw him as a talented freak — an image that deeply pained Jackson.
So while Motown founder Berry Gordy talked about the child prodigy he signed at age 10, and pronounced him not just the King of Pop, but “the greatest entertainer who ever lived,” he also talked about the little kid who played catcher during family softball games against the Gordys, who cracked jokes and frolicked in the pool. Magic Johnson talked about the perfectionist who made him achieve higher heights as a basketball player, but also told of sitting around and eating KFC at his home. And Shields talked about a friendship in which laughter was central to it all.
“We had a bond, and maybe it was because we both understood what it was like to be in the spotlight from a very, very young age,” Shields said, fighting back tears. “Both of us needed to be adults very early, but when we were together, we were two little kids having fun. … M.J.’s laugh was the sweetest and purest of anyone I’ve known.”
For Jackson’s family and the organizers of the memorial, it was a successful rehabilitation of the image of a superstar who had been derided for so long. The words “sweet” and “pure” had rarely been used to describe Jackson in the last two decades of his life, marked by allegations of child abuse, an ever-changing face, multiple lawsuits, eccentric behavior and what seemed to be one bad career move after another.
Only true Jackson fans, a number that seemed to be dwindling year after year, seemed to remember the man who dazzled us with “Thriller,” made us swoon with delight with infectious grooves like “Rock With You” and “Remember the Time,” and conversed with presidents, kings and queens.
Tuesday’s memorial reminded us of that Michael Jackson, too. The universally revered and admired former South African President, Nelson Mandela, offered words of condolences and love for Jackson in a statement read by Smokey Robinson.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, talked about how Jackson held court with African leaders in his bid to help slow the spread of AIDS there.
And Maya Angelou, who was also represented by her words instead of her presence, offered a loving tribute for the entertainer in remarks read by Queen Latifah.
“He took a pose on his toes for all of us,” Angelou wrote, remarking on his worldwide influence from “Birmingham, Ala., to Birmingham, England.”
For an entertainer known for his amazing music, song took a backseat to sentiment at the service. But when it was used, it was to great effect. His very biggest hits were not part of the program.
Instead, what we heard were the songs that reinforced Jackson outside of entertainment. Longtime friend Stevie Wonder — who summarized the thoughts of many when he said, “This is a moment I wished I didn’t live to see” — sang his own “Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer,” originally intended as a bitter breakup song but repurposed as a sad goodbye.
Lionel Richie, Jackson’s collaborator on the anthem “We Are the World,” sang a gospel classic, “Jesus is Love.” Another gospel hymn heralded the arrival of Jackson’s casket when a choir sang the lines, “Hallelujah, hallelujah, we’re going to see the King.”
Two of Jackson’s songs underscored his humanitarian side — the closing numbers, “We Are the World” and the anthem for his charity, “Heal the World.”
Usher’s heartbreaking rendition of “Gone Too Soon,” which Jackson wrote as a memorial for Ryan White, one of the early public faces of AIDS, captured the pain not only of his fans and friends, but of his family, as the Jackson brothers came together and gripped a sobbing Usher in their arms afterward.
And Jermaine Jackson’s version of “Smile,” which Michael Jackson had often used as a metaphor for his own tragic life, was a fitting epitaph for his brother.
But perhaps no one lifted up the image of Jackson more than the Rev. Al Sharpton, in rousing, church-like sermon that took Michael Jackson back from the tabloid headlines. Sharpton looked at Jackson’s children and declared: “Your daddy wasn’t strange — what he had to deal with was strange
