Carrie Underwood is one of the most gorgeous gals in Hollywood, hands down. There is just something so relatable about her – maybe it's her love of music and clothes but especially the way she plays around with her makeup, just like we do! Her latest fav is the must-have item for the upcoming summer travel season – DEX New York's Beauty Portfolio. So which colors fill Carrie's carrier?

DEX even gave us the inside scoop on Carrie's portfolio: "a selection of blues (Boat House Sky Blue), greens (Ms. Liberty Green) golds (Rockefeller Gold) and neutrals (Winter Garden White) eye shadows to compliment her eyes." So if you catch Miss Underwood with glimmering green and gold eyes, you know where she got it; straight from DEX!

Fill yours with your favorite bronzer, blush, shadow, and foundation then toss it in your summer handbag for a great on-the-go fix.

SHOW: Reem AcraMAKEUP: Polly Osmond for M.A.CHAIR: Bumble and BumbleBEAUTY SNAPSHOOT: Soft, glossy, goddess inspired.

THE SCOOP: The look at this red carpet favorite was, not surprisingly, red carpet ready. As lead makeup artist Polly Osmond said "The clothes are very elegant so we wanted to do a makeup look that was young to give it balance. It's goddess inspired but still very muted and soft in all dusky tones." To execute her vision, Osmond applied a taupe eyeshadow mixed with a cream color base in a slightly darker brown to give the eye depth and then a swiped gloss across the arch of the eye. On the face, Osmond applied a highlighter to the cheek and then a dab of gloss on the upper cheekbone. To finish off, concealer was applied to the lips to take down their color and then layered with a neutral shade of lipstick. To wear this off the runway Osmond says to remember "it's about using everything minimally and matting down the t-zone so you don't look shiny in the wrong places."

As for the lovely side swept hair, the experts with Bumble and Bumble said the look was created because the designer wanted something "finished and polished. What we're doing is very sophisticated and very red carpet but the low part gives it a modernity and frames the face in a graphic way." To get the look start by creating the side part while the hair is damp and then apply styling lotion before drying it flat. Next smooth the hair into a side ponytail. Instead of a twist the stylist suggests you create a loose braid and then pin it up. "It's much easier to shape and control a braid instead of a twist when you are working on your own hair and the results are very similar."

A designer is only as good as his/her tools, and these days, you’ll find some of the very latest and greatest online.

In sewing circles, these tools are called notions, and here are a few of my absolute favorites:

Transferring accurate markings onto your fabric is critical for good construction and that requires more than the standard and messy tailor’s chalk found at chain fabric stores — it cracks and crumbles and can be hard to remove.

Enter the elegant, heart-shaped Chakoner (below), which lays down a chalk line so precise you’ll smile every time you pull it out of your kit. The chalk has just the right consistency, not too dense or too faint.

While I prefer traditional chalk, you can also go spy-style with dual-marking disappearing ink, water soluble pens.
Flexible rulers, from 16 to 40 inches, can be a designer’s best friend, especially when you are draping and navigating the curves of your dress form.

Unlike a traditional measuring tape, they hold their shape — a lifesaver for designing, drafting and fitting. To see how to use it, check out this fab video tip.

Surgical supply stores are a surprisingly great resource for sewing and design tools. Consider the bad-boy hemostat (as in "Nurse, hemostat!): It's the perfect tool for pulling things through tight spaces and embellishment work like ribbon- and fabric-weaving.

Rolls of examining room table paper are a great substitute for pattern paper (and much cheaper), especially when you buy the rolls in bulk. (Though tempting, don't even consider "borrowing" this awkwardly-sized item from your doctor's office!)

Tool Tip: Looking in unexpected places like surgical, office supply and hardware stores can save you money over the usual marked-up and pricey sewing shops.

Next week, we'll discover some of the best DIY fashion blogs around, so you can start your sewing, stat!

Amber Eden is the former editor-in-chief of Threads magazine and founding editor of SewStylish magazine and CraftStylish.com. She has studied draping and haute couture techniques at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), and according to her, will probably be a student there for life.

Chris Brown, the singer infamously known for beating up former girlfriend Rihanna, posed with a "bloodied and bruised" Jean Paul Gaultier yesterday in Paris.

Gaultier was in the City of Lights for his fall 2010 runway show at Men's Fashion Week, which featured a boxing theme complete with a catwalk-side ring and big, bruiser models sporting boxing gloves and faux lacerations on their chiseled faces.

The designer got into it as well with a "beaten up" face himself, courtesy of makeup artists, that is. Brown attended the show after being spotted at men's shows in Milan earlier this week.

While we're used to a publicity stunt or two from fashion's front row, this picture of the singer posing next to Gaultier reads as just plain callous and conjures up those horrific images of a bloodied and beaten Rihanna. She suffered real injuries, ones involving no makeup.

Brown's big ol' grin doesn't help lighten the unavoidable allusions to his Rihanna attack. Honestly, we think it was in really poor taste and shows complete lack of judgment and sensitivity on Brown's part.

But what do you think? Was it inappropriate for Brown to pose with Jean Paul Gaultier given his assault charges? Or are we being overly sensitive and reading into things?

Plus, should Jean Paul Gaultier have invited Brown to the boxing-themed show in the first place? Leave a comment!

Meanwhile, hear Rihanna's side of the story. The Barbados-native talked to GQ about her abusive relationship.

Gregory Arlt morphed models into the “A+ version of themselves” with his modern take on no makeup-makeup. “This is my beauty exorcism,” Arlt said. “I’m puling the beauty from within to create an absolutely luminous, fresh and healthy look.”

GET THE LOOK - MAKEUP: All makeup by MAC. Arlt's nude, clean face begins with applying a combination of Face and Body Foundation and Strobe Liquid. To minimize shine, use Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 Foundation. Eyes are warmed up with Cream Colour Base Fawntastic and Eye Shadow in Bamboo and lashes curled. Highlight underneath the eyes up into the cheekbone and on bridge of the nose with a Cream Colour Base in Pearl. For that bronze glow, sweep Eye Shadow in Bamboo on cheeks. Use Pro Lash for a soft, separated open eye. And to finish, tone done the natural pink of pout with Face and Body Foundation and Eye Shadow in Bamboo.

GET THE LOOK - HAIR: All products by Bumble and Bumble. Farid pulled hair back and used a curling iron to make deep, textured waves. Secure sides with Gel and finger comb in Brilliantine and Finishing Balm. Finish look with Shine.

GET THE LOOK - NAILS: All products by CND. File nails into a round, pointed tip. Apply two coats of Putty and Copper Shimmer and then seal with one coat of Air Dry.

You often hear it repeated that "ignorance is no defense" to breaking the law, but it may actually be working in one copyright infringement lawsuit. Ray Beckerman has the details on a case where the RIAA is suing a teenager who claimed "innocent infringement" as a way to get the damages lowered from the $750 to $150,000 per file that the RIAA always pushes for. So, while the RIAA pointed out that there was a copyright notice on every CD, the court sided with the girl who pointed out that there was no such copyright notice on Kazaa or the songs she downloaded. In fact, she wasn't even aware that she was "downloading" -- assuming that Kazaa worked more like a radio. Of course, before others make the same argument, it does pay to recognize that the facts in this case are likely to be unique to this case, and probably don't apply in many other cases. The real problem still remains the ridiculous disconnect between the amount of "damages" allowed under the law and the actual "harm" (if any) caused by file sharing.

The same procedure as last year? The same procedure as every year!

And they’re not just looking: Forrester Research survey data suggests that 87 percent of enterprises that try open source actually realize cost savings from its adoption.

This sounds like a perfect message for Dell, the low-cost hardware company, to be selling.

Dell, with $10 billion for M&A, to offer open source

According to BusinessWeek, Dell has amassed a $10 billion war chest with which it intends to buy BMC Software, Symantec, or another big technology company to expand into new markets–and particularly software markets–in a bid to boost profitability.

So why is Dell talking about buying up bloated, proprietary software companies out of one side of its mouth, even as it acknowledges that open source does the job for less money out of the other side of its mouth?

The more advanced the customers, the more likely they will adopt open source, because they are likely to ask why they should spend money on something they can get free.

Yet even as Dell ponders where to spend its cash, it is reportedly rolling out a program to provide free, open-source applications to small and midsize businesses. The reason is simple, according to Amit Midha, president of Dell’s Asia-Pacific and Japan region for the SMB business:

Maybe Dell should straighten out its story by buying Red Hat?

Dell could very well be envisioning offering open source to seed new customer accounts and then upselling proprietary software, similar to IBM’s model. But I suspect that the company’s software strategy is nowhere near as nuanced as IBM’s. I think that this is simply an example of a top-down strategy (buy big software companies!) conflicting with bottom-up demand (our customers want open source!).
